the Surrogate Leader
More often than not, those who claim to ge the leader are merely an unwitting front to the person who is.
All through history leaders have actually been sculpted from the actions and direction of key deputies. Even those more nefarious ones!!
So in a way it does really put a new lens on leadership. Is it always the person at the helm, front of stage and all over the corporate intranet?
Or are they simply the figurehead. The truth is they should be both.
They need to have the leadership but what they will do, if they have, is appoint a good deputy.
That individual who brings a balance. Who can take the direction from a visionary perhaps driven leader and mould into something more structured.
They will be on hand to offer safe advice and be the temperature gauge to how people across the ranks are feeling.
And more often than not they keep the noise away.
So in turn the assumed leader should focus on strategic direction and be the feeder for the surrogate to shape and develop into action.
The perfect leadership; the perfect relationship!
