Maintain the base

The old philosophy of slicing and bloating the ranks dependent on how business is going surely needs reviewed?

We all recognise markets fluctuate and sure margins need to be maintained but sometimes turning the work force up and down brings other inefficiencies.

The cost of recruitment, the impact of heavier workload on existing staff not to mention brain drain and loss of experience. Both leading to increased training costs.

Some companies operate the core-flex model. At least this keeps the experience base focused on critical areas whilst flexing on the not so critical.

But sometimes when the markets are being impacted, by not deep slicing you are in a better position than your competitors to get a more powerful restart!

Of course there is also the matter of trending. If there are peaks and troughs, this indicates how best to average out the numbers.

It's so important to nurture talent and create loyalty but that comes with clear focus and sustainable working.

Talent does not like sporadic and those seeking loyalty less so!
